Text presents questions about high school expansion in the state of Paraná, marking the end of the 1940s as a beginning of this process. The sources mobilized indicate some social aspects that changed the demand for high school, government actions to attend the needs and the contradictions of the expansion. Such issues shaped a network of public high schools numerically superior to institutions in the private sphere, although the obstacles to expansion may have made it more difficult to guarantee access to high school for a more significant portion of the population. At the end, situates the engendering of discussions and actions aiming at the transformation of this schooling level.
