Abstract

This article discusses the treatment given to the illustrations of the Governmental Program Conta pra Mim (BRASIL, 2020a). It presents the advances inherent in children's literature in the dimension of ethnic-racial relations, as well as exposing the historical context of implementation of this public policy. Based on Vigotski's contribution, it resorts to the concepts of imagination, and creativity, also chooses as its analytical corpus two circumscribed illustrations in the “fiction books” category present in the program's collection. It argues that current government policy ignores advances in the field of children's literature and the discussions and struggles inherent in education for ethnic-racial relations, through a policy whitening. It concludes that such an attempt constitutes an obstacle to imagination, creation and fantasy and provides a great service to the maintenance of a social imaginary based on hegemonic Eurocentric standards.
