Mediated by the feminist perspective of biographical studies, we seek to narrate important aspects to the understanding of the research developed by the psychiatrist Iracy Doyle, the first Brazilian intellectual to turn to studies on female homosexuality, in the first half of the 20th century. Therefore, we anchored in the theoretical-methodological contributions of the bibliographical and documental research carried out at the “Sociedade de Psicanálise Iracy Doyle”, in Rio de Janeiro. Significantly distancing herself from the androcentric conclusions of her peers, the psychiatrist described female “sexual inversion” as a repulsive action of women against their subordination to male rule. In this direction, it defended the promotion of women's autonomy by questioning educational practices that, in their majority, sought to strengthen asymmetric relationships between the sexes and, consequently, the submission and devaluation of women.
Keywords : psychiatry; feminism; androcentrism.
