The object of this study is the formation primary school teachers in the city of Rio de Janeiro. It sought to understand how teacher education has been carried out and to identify its influence on the professionalization of teachers. The text is a theoretical essay based on quantitative research, carried out from the microdata of Enade, Census of Basic and Higher Education of 2017 and the production of comparative tables and graphs. The theoretical interlocutors are the studies of formation and teaching profession. The text maps three scenarios: The teachers of the initial years in performance; The pedagogy course as locus of formation teachers of the initial years; The normal course: present! It is identified that it is necessary to bet on a process of universityization articulated with the school, aiming at the identification of a set of knowledge, of identity and ethical elements that characterize the profession. Working teachers and researchers need to approach each other producing the new, rescuing the old and articulating experiences for the consolidation of a place for teacher education.
