ROCHA, Ivana Aparecida de Araujo  and  SARAVALI, Eliane Giachetto. WORK ON NOTIONS ABOUT INDIGENOUS PEOPLES - RECOGNITION AND RESPECT CONTEXTS. This paper presents part of the results of an action research whose objectives were to analyze the notions that elementary school students have about the identity, diversity and culture of indigenous peoples, as well as to promote a pedagogical intervention on the subject. The participants were 27 students, from 5th grade, of a private school, located in the countryside of São Paulo state. In the diagnostic phase, the students, who were submitted to a semi-structured interview, presented thoughts that the indigenous people are recognized only by their apparent and caricatured aspects, with ideas based on stereotypes. In the action phase, 19 planned activities, were developed with the class, with the intention of providing information, promoting debate and exchanges, enabling the recognition of the native peoples of our country. The results of the evaluation phase showed advances in the beliefs of the participants, who let go of stigmas and began to recognize the diversity and culture of those peoples.

Keywords : indigenous peoples; action research; elementary school; interventional activity.
