Abstract

PEREZ, Francisco Efraín Dionisio. THE HISTORICAL-REAL CONTEXT OF THE TZ’UTUJIL LANGUAGE AND ITS CHALLENGES IN SANTA MARÍA VISITACIÓN, GUATEMALA. Revista da FAEEBA: Educação e Contemporaneidade [online]. 2022, vol.31, n.67, pp.232-247.  Epub Jan 13, 2023. ISSN 2358-0194.  https://doi.org/10.21879/faeeba2358-0194.2022.v31.n67.p232-247.

Starting in 1580, the town of Santa María Visitación - a population of the Guatemalan highlands, located in the Department of Sololá - experienced a new break with the arrival of the Spaniards in the Tz’utujil kingdom. A new context begins, and in this sense, the idiomatic part was affected by the urgency to learn Spanish. So, this work wants to offer a specific historical journey through which the Tz’utujil language has passed so far, where the different challenges, events and actors that at the time have influenced such journey are detected and analyzed. For its understanding, we reflect on the past of the idiomatic reality taking into account topics such as the vision of the missionaries, territoriality and the appearance of new speaking groups, the school reality from the linguistic point of view and the comparison of new challenges. The article addresses this topic to open fields of research and provoke interest so that, together with other entities, it is possible to undertake a project to rescue and strengthen the learning of the mother tongue with the new generation. From here lies this interest for which the article is written calling for the language situation of the town of Santa María Visitación not to be forgotten.
