This article aims at presenting the ethnographic imagination as a powerful tool for critical research in education. Learning from a literature review about ethnography in education, the present work proposes there is a rich diversity in ethnographic practices in education. This study points to the possibility of approaching the Brazilian educational reality under the perspective of the ethnographic imagination, according to Paul Willis. This manuscript, therefore, theoretically discusses this category, establishing a methodological liability proposal for the operation of an ethnographic imagination, as well as a stepby-step procedure for its operation. Results indicate the proposal for a new sensitivity towards the ethnographic work in education, the invite to a new methodological perspective and the reorientation of methodological procedures for collecting and analyzing ethnographic data in educational research.
