The article reviews international literature regarding concepts of literacy and illiteracy, considering links with writing, society and culture from a synchronic and diachronic viewpoint. It examines individual and social dimensions of literacy, discusses problems involved in establishing criteria to define literacy, analyzes the concept of functional literacy and other tendencies related to the theme and, finally, lists perspectives regarding illiteracy.
