Opening conference of the XVIII . Annual Meeting of ANPEd, held in 1995, where two views of education’s goals and how to reach them are polarized: democratic citizen education and education for productivity. The first is a result the extensive movement over the last two centuries in favor of equality and which resulted in modem democracy; the second has its origins in neo liberal mystique which renders its services to the state.
