Identity dilemmas and the resulting political problems bring forth the necessity of examining the idea of a multicultural society. Issues regarding the process of modernization are discussed: liberty and equality and their consequences on democracy, specially in French society, in order to guarantee a better understanding of the meaning of multiculturalism. The relation of these principles with the issue of identity in today's societies suggest four debates which are taken up by the article: equality versus equity; equality versus difference; liberty versus difference and liberty versus equity.
