An attempt to systematize the main innovative trends in the history of literacy in general and specially in Portugal, conciliating methodological and theoretical aspects. This is a searching inquiry, open to few hypothesis and problems which assume the fragile nature of historical knowledge on this subject as regards the case of Portugal. The text is divided in three parts and the last one is organized so as to raise methodological and theoretical issues. After briefly referring to the pattern of innovation of the history of literacy it presents a synthesis of the state of knowledge relative to the history of literacy in Portugal and, finally, raises questions and presents on innovative methodological contribution.
