The article refers to a research entitled "From the text to History of a discipline: the Sociology of Education which can be read in Education and Development in Brazil by J.R. Moreira", developed by the Educational Department of PUC in Rio de Janeiro from J 993 to 1995. It focuses the Sociology of Education which Moreira constructs in Education and Development in Brazil, as well as the relationship between the book and a group of educators/researchers who met in the Brazilian Center for Educational Research (CBPE). In this center, Moreira coordinated the work of educators and social scientists which were, respectively, in the Division of Educational Studies and Research (DEPE) and the Division o( Social Studies and Research (DEPS). In previous studies, (Brandão 1992b and Mendonça 1993), the hypothesis had been that, within the process in which education achieved its autonomy (initiated in the 20's), the generation of educators who participated in the Brazilian Association of Education (ABE) was constructing a professional identity which unfolded into important issues regarding education's epistemological identity. This identity was at the origin of a tradition in research which reached its high point in the CBPE experience, and which has been lost/ forgotten by the generations that have graduated since the 50's.
