The relationship between poverty, schooling and employment opportunities are analyzed here. Some affirmations about the issue are taken up and their validity questioned, such as the strict connection between poverty-school failure-abandon-social exclusion. Two issues are taken up: To what extent is the school truly valued by poor youth and by their domestic group? What is the perspective of giving importance to the schooling standard when considering, employment availability for poor urban youngsters? In order to answer this the author resorts to family history of socialization and, more specifically, to family history of schooling.
