The authors examine young Italians' relation to work within the framework of present changes in society by means of research carried out by IARD in 1983, 1987 and 1992. Data of the 1992 survey is analyzed and shows that the concept of youth has undergone change. Among the changes perceived some are noteworthy such as: the prolonging of the age of youth, the retarding of the transition to adulthood and the disconnection from family ties, as well as the change in perception regarding work. An attempt is made to demonstrate how the present crisis has enormously affected the insertion of youth in the labor force and its relation with the degree of instruction, with the choice of a profession, with the future expectations of these youngsters.
