Abstract

SANCHEZ-JANKOWSKI, Martín. Gangs and the press: producing a national myth. Rev. Bras. Educ. [online]. 1997, n.05-06, pp.180-198. ISSN 1413-2478.

Based on an investigation of twelve years about this issue the author tries to explain gangs as “organizations". As a collective response to an economical situation of poverty and isolation, gangs create rational strategies for survival, applied both to increasing their membership and to establishing relations with the surroundings rival organizations, police, the political system, mass media, etc. For the author, these relations establish multiform systems of exchange which encourage the existence of gangs. An analysis of media's contributions proposed to verify how it contributes towards the persistence of the phenomenon of North American urban gangs.
