Abstract

GUIMARAES, Eloisa. Youth and urban periphery. Rev. Bras. Educ. [online]. 1997, n.05-06, pp.199-208. ISSN 1413-2478.

The article examines a youth association called “galera" which emerges in the "carioca" suburbs. "Galeras" relate to "funk" although they are not quite the same. The expression designates groups of urban periphery youth with some internal organization. structured around their residential areas from  which they get their names. Youth movements are heterogeneous and this is where the "galeras" that are studied appear. The article also indicates that these groups are fragmented and divided.
