The article discusses the development of a new subject in the field of Sociology of Education: the selection of a school by families. The author examines and comments the results of some research done on this subject recently by British and French sociologists which - although focusing on different national contexts and using different theoretical perspectives - converge on some points of their conclusions. Among these, the most important one refers to social class inequalities among the families. in relation to the necessary cultural qualification to bring about a "good" choice.
