The article tells about research to measure and analyze the phenomenon of literacy among youngsters and adults conducted in São Paulo. Research included testing reading skills, answering a questionnaire with a representative sample within the 15 to 54 age bracket, as well as an interview and simulated reading and writing tasks with a smaller sample group. Theoretical problems are discussed relating to the analysis and to psychosocial implications of literacy. Profiles or groups with higher and lower literacy rates are described and explanatory factors of this condition are given. Some political and pedagogical guidelines are given derived from these results.
