Resumo

TRINDADE, Hélgio. University in perspective: society, knowledge and power. Rev. Bras. Educ. [online]. 1999, n.10, pp.05-15. ISSN 1413-2478.

The article first reviews the university in order to perceive, in the dynamics of its history, some key  elements to help understand its institutional nature. Then a description is made of new problems which have faced this institution as an outcome of scientific and technological development which resulted from the industrial revolution. Within this framework the author analyses and discusses the recent and complex  relations of university, knowledge and power, highlighting the fact that science and its organization have become an eminently political issue. Concluding, it considers present political debate and its possible outcome with regard to higher learning in Latin  America.
