Abstract

FAVERO, Maria de Lourdes de Albuquerque. The University of Brazil: a path marked by struggles. Rev. Bras. Educ. [online]. 1999, n.10, pp.16-32. ISSN 1413-2478.

The text reviews the concept of university, characteristic throughout the history of this institution, since 1920 when it was established; it analyses the Higher Learning Reform of Francisco Campos (1931) when it was reorganized; it studies Law n° 452/37 that formalizes the institution with the name of University of Brazil (UB) until November 1965, when its name was changed to Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). The article analyzes how the principle of autonomy is seen and instituted in the University; it situates the "hegemonic groups" that appear within it throughout is development, explicitly or no!; it situates the role and composition of its corporate bodies and their power of decision, who uses them and to what end. The article then identifies the institutional conditions for the development or teaching and research towards producing knowledge until the 60's.
