Abstract

SCHNEUWLY, Bernard  and  DOLZ, Joaquim. School genres: from language practices to teaching objects. Rev. Bras. Educ. [online]. 1999, n.11, pp.05-16. ISSN 1413-2478.

Every text genre becomes a school genre when it is made an object for teaching. This paper discusses the above thesis in three parts. First, the central role of the notion of "genre" for the construction of language capacities needed for language activities is developed theoretically and related to "language practices." Secondly, three "ideal-types" are distinguished for treating genres in the teaching of oral and written text production. Thirdly, the foregoing points allow the author to present proposals for treating genres didactically in schools. The articulation of these propositions with the notion of language practices presented at the beginning of the paper brings up a number of central questions for future didactic practices.
