Abstract

CARVALHO, Marília Pinto de. Teaching, a relational activity. Rev. Bras. Educ. [online]. 1999, n.11, pp.17-32. ISSN 1413-2478.

Based on observations in the classroom and interviews held in a public primary school (first four grades), this article discusses relational aspects of a teacher's work with children. Extra-cognitive aspects of the relationship among ma/e and female teachers and male and female students are emphasized, such as affective involvement, attention to children's family and social problems, concern with their moral formation, their emotional needs, their health and hygiene, etc. These aspects are understood as practices in child care, and the relationships between them and the socially determined concepts of masculinity and femininity are discussed. Directions are also indicated as to how both men and women teachers of these grades might learn a model of teaching which incorporates care as a value and a frame of reference.
