Abstract

FERREIRA, Márcia Ondina Vieira. Ethnic identity, marginality and the role of schooling from the perspective of Spanish Gypsies. Rev. Bras. Educ. [online]. 1999, n.11, pp.46-60. ISSN 1413-2478.

In this article, the author discusses the schooling process of Gypsy children in Spain from the point of view of Gypsy groups themselves regarding the role of the school. It is first summarized a number of studies an the relationship between school and cultural diversity of Gypsies, in an attempt to clarify three areas: a) the relationships between social marginality and ethnicity; b) the role of the school in modifying ethnic characteristics; and, c) the relations between professional qualification and behavior at work and school. The Compensatory Education Program is analyzed in reference to the Gypsy community as well as the opinion of Gypsies regarding their children's schooling. The main respondents were groups in Spain that support the Gypsy cause. All the above aspects contribute toward the author's analysis as to how important schooling is for advances related to the marginality of Gypsy groups.
