Abstract

ZANTEN, Agnès van. Global knowledge, local knowledge: recent evolution of the sociology of education in France and England. Rev. Bras. Educ. [online]. 1999, n.12, pp.48-58. ISSN 1413-2478.

This text presents an analysis of the development of the sociology of education in France and England over the last thirty years. The central hypothesis is that, during this period, there was an important change in the definition' of sociological knowledge in this area: a greater opening to observe the procedures of the subjects under study, both for scientific as well as for political and professional reasons. Based on examples from both countries, four different points are analyzed: the evolution of theoretical focuses, the fragmentation and re-composition of the research themes, the changes in work methods and the transformation or the sociologist's outlook.
