OLIVEIRA, Marta Kohl de. Youngsters and adults as subjects of knowledge and learning. Rev. Bras. Educ. [online]. 1999, n.12, pp.59-73. ISSN 1413-2478.

This text explores the specific characteristics regarding the construction processes of learning and knowledge of the cultural group made up of youngsters and adults with a low level of instruction. It refers to many explanations that are found in literature about cultural differences in intellectual performance. The principal question that could be asked about this issue is: are there real psychological functioning differences in general and, more specifically, in cognitive functioning, among subjects that belong to different cultural groups? In the case that is examined here, do these youngsters and adults with a low level or instruction, as subjects of knowledge and learning, operate in a universal mode or in modes marked by a specific cultural belonging? Specialized literature identifies three main lines of thought about possible relations between culture and different forms of intellectual functioning: that which admits the difference among  cultural groups, that which attempts to deny the importance of this difference and a third that recovers the difference and works on it at another level. Schools for youngsters and adults are seen as being a place where cultural confrontation occurs and, as in any other place of social interaction, where singularities meet.
