Abstract

VIANNA, Cláudia. São Paulo teachers' organization: crisis, collective identity and gender relations. Rev. Bras. Educ. [online]. 2000, n.13, pp.54-72. ISSN 1413-2478.

This article expounds an the results of a qualitative empirical study based on interviews with male and female teachers of the state public school system in São Paulo. It discusses the possibilities of constructing collective identity of the teaching class in the period between 1990 and 1997 by discussing the difficulties in mobilization, the appearance of new kinds of action as well as the reestablishing of teachers' collective identity within school routine. It also shows that part of the characteristics of teachers' collective action in this process refer to gender, especially the masculine and feminine meanings that define the change in collective action of this class.
