Abstract

BOTO, Carlota. The Brazil that Portugal wrotes: pedagogy and politics without celebrations. Rev. Bras. Educ. [online]. 2000, n.15, pp.16-40. ISSN 1413-2478.

This study focuses on the images of Brazil conveyed by XIXth century Portuguese textbooks, periodicals and intellectuals. Through the analysis of such documents, we intend to recreate some of the mental atmosphere that surrounded the Portuguese nation’s idea of Brazil and their perception of the themes of the Brazilian country, its people and of emigration. We believe that this approach will make it possible to understand the identities that shaped certain cultural myths as well as define distances and differences.
