Abstract

SETTON, Maria da Graça Jacintho. The theory of habitus in Pierre Bourdieu: a contemporary reading. Rev. Bras. Educ. [online]. 2002, n.20, pp.60-70. ISSN 1413-2478.

The purpose of this article is to reflect upon the peculiarity of the process of socialisation and the construction of identity of individuals in the contemporary world. To undertake this analysis I make use of Norbert Elias' concept of configuration, of Pierre Bourdieu's theory of habitus and of Anthony Giddens' institutional concept of modernity. The article deals specifically with an interpretation on the concept of habitus, based on the singularity of those social and cultural conditionings experienced by modem societies.

Keywords : Socialisation; Habitus; Configuration; Modernity.
