Abstract

WEREBE, Maria José Garcia. A laicidade do ensino público na França. Rev. Bras. Educ. [online]. 2004, n.27, pp.192-197. ISSN 1413-2478.

The text presents a brief history of secularity in French public education, introduced in 1880 when Jules Ferry organized the primary school, making it public, free and obligatory. From then on crucifixes were removed from the classrooms and all religious and political propaganda was forbidden in schools. The text also recuperates the polemic which has raged in that country since 1989 and above all since 2003, concerning secularity, triggered off by the prohibition of the use of religious symbols by students, in particular the islamic veil used by students from muslim families. It extends the discussion to other european countries, considering the present political situation marked by conflicts provoked by terrorist movements.

Keywords : France; Public Schooling; Secularity.
