Abstract

BURNIER, Suzana et al. Histórias de vida de professores: o caso da educação profissional. Rev. Bras. Educ. [online]. 2007, vol.12, n.35, pp.343-358. ISSN 1413-2478.

This paper presents the results of research carried out with teachers of institutions of professional education in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte. The chosen methodology was "life histories" which was employed to analyse the discourse of these teachers about their lives. The research aimed to investigate their representations of teaching to raise questions concerning their points of view about the teaching profession and how they considered this experience in the wake of their life projects. The discourse of 20 teachers was analysed observing those elements which contributed to their choice of career, entrance and permanence in the teaching profession as well as the meanings constructed therein. These statements showed that the majority of these teachers of professional education began their careers in technical areas in industry. Their entrance into the teaching career happened by chance and was associated with the possibility of financial gain. The results of the research also suggested that these subjects feel that the teaching profession gives them greater social status when compared with their former technical professions, in addition to a perception of the wider social meaning of the work undertaken.
