Abstract

CHAVES, DENISE RAISSA LOBATO  and  SOUZA, MAURICIO RODRIGUES DE. BULLYING AND PREJUDICE: THE CURRENTNESS OF BARBARISM. Rev. Bras. Educ. [online]. 2018, vol.23, e230019.  Epub Mar 26, 2018. ISSN 1809-449X.  https://doi.org/10.1590/s1413-24782018230019.

Among the many kinds of violence at school, bullying is one of the most important ones. This phenomenon consists of intentional physical and psychological violence directed to a specific person, who is considered fragile and inferior by the bully. Thus, bullying provides short and long term negative consequences to all involved, and presents as potentially related to denial and rejection of the others. Therefore, this research analyzes the conceptual limitations of bullying by utilizing Critical Theory as its main theoretical framework - more specifically the ideas of Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer about education, emancipation and prejudice. Lastly, it denounces the naturalization of bullying at school, and the alienation to the concept, revealing it to be a new form of barbarism that remains today.

Keywords : bullying; prejudice; barbarism.
