The article discusses the old question of the status of Karl Marx’s Economic-philosophical manuscripts. This is a theoretical study based on the basic literature on the subject and seeks to recover the history and the many disputes surrounding the 1844 Manuscripts, especially in relation to the 1960s-1970s. Examining some contributions from three important authors of that period - István Mészáros, Ernest Mandel, and Lucien Sève - allows to restore the complexity of the discussion undertaken in that context. In view of the issues addressed, the article concludes that it is important to ponder the content of the 1844 Manuscripts in the set of Marxian work, as well as it is important to avoid two misconceptions, that of underestimating and that of overestimating this essential text of Marx.
