Abstract

RIBEIRO, Norberto. A BRIEF ESSAY ON CITIZENSHIP IN TIMES OF PANDEMIC: NEUROTIC OR NONCONFORMIST CITIZEN?. Rev. Bras. Educ. [online]. 2023, vol.28, e280092.  Epub Sep 06, 2023. ISSN 1809-449X.  https://doi.org/10.1590/s1413-24782023280092.

The present essay explores the neurotic citizen concept to analyse the type of citizenship promoted in managing the pandemic caused by covid-19. The proposal of a “nonconformist citizenship” emerges from the reflection as a viable alternative to a “neurotic citizenship”, as this presupposes the impoverishment of the democratic quality of societies. The crucial role of education in promoting critical and non-conformist citizenship is highlighted allowing individuals to be aware of their neuroses and to act in accordance with democratic values.

Keywords : neurotic citizenship; nonconformist citizenship; education; democracy.
