Abstract
ROCHA, Luiz Renato Martins da. The permanence of deaf and hearing-impaired students in undergraduate and graduate courses: disputes and struggles around singularities. Rev. Bras. Educ. [online]. 2025, vol.30, e300079. Epub Sep 08, 2025. ISSN 1809-449X. https://doi.org/10.1590/s1413-24782025300079.
The enrollment of students from special education and bilingual education for the deaf has been exponentially increasing in Brazilian higher education each year. Within this context, our objective was to understand the experiences of deaf and hearing-impaired students in undergraduate and graduate programs at three federal universities in São Paulo, focusing on their relationships with professors, sign language interpreters, and hearing classmates. The methodological approach involved descriptive research, of qualitative nature, using a validated questionnaire administered to 11 deaf and eight hearing-impaired participants. The results indicate a still complex permanence process, since, despite the acceptance of Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), there is a lack of interest in learning it and few actions aimed at respecting linguistic singularity. It was observed that those with hearing impairment are better adapted compared to deaf students.
