The issues related to the production and dissemination of scientiflc knowledge on special education have been focused ia many scientiflc conferences ia the last decade. In the present study, 197 master thesis defended between 1981 and 1995 in the Master´s Programs from UERJ and UFSCar were analysed. The data showed that descriptive studies about teaching and learning of school children, aged 5 to 14, with men tal retardation were prevalent. Psycho-educational model lias substituted the clinical perspective. Special education pedagogical questions were seen as more syntonic to the regular education issues. There was an increase in studies on school daily life, in which the deficiency is treated ia more relational and contextualized perspectives.
