This article tries to draw attention to fact that mythology can contribute to the process of reflection on normality and deficiency. The narrative of how mythological beings that carry deficiencies, particularly Hefesto and Filoctetes - were excluded and, later, included in life with their similars, presents an excellent example for the reflection on this problem nowadays. In spite of all modern scientific and technological aids, and also the gains in terms of citizenship, people who do not fit into the standards of normality still go through several degrees of discrimination.
