Abstract

BIANCHETTI, Lucídio. A look at difference: multiple ways of seeing and being seen and their consequences. Rev. bras. educ. espec. [online]. 2002, vol.08, n.01, pp.01-08. ISSN 1413-6538.

This text reflects on the multiplicity of forms that can be assumed in the perspective of one who looks at and one who is looked at or stigmatized, and emphasizes the role of subjects and “objects” of various looks. We conceive the look as a way of positioning oneself before the world. The look is also understood as a language that is constructed and executed in contact with others - through inter-relationships. Given this factor, we point to different levels of human relations that range from ignorance, to approximation and sympathy, to the possibility of achieving empathy. We focus our attention on the role of the look in the capturing and production of difference in the context of human relationships in general and among the carriers of special educational needs in particular. Finally, with a brief report on a striking experience, we reflect upon the difference between looking at difference and to be looked upon as different.

Keywords : Multiple Looks; Difference; Stigmatization; Prejudice; Equality.
