Resumen

DIAS, Tárcia et al. The view of multiple professionals in a capacitation program on bilingual focus. Rev. bras. educ. espec. [online]. 2002, vol.08, n.02, pp.169-182. ISSN 1413-6538.

The matter of the educator formation is a capital one, mainly when the present changes in education and also the propositions of bilingualism have led to the recognition of the Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS - Língua Brasileira de Sinais) as a means of communication and expression of Brazilian deaf communities. In view of the need for continuous professional improvement of those who work with deaf students, partnerships with three public schools in Ribeirão Preto and surrounding areas were proposed aiming at enabling professionals representative of the partner institutions, hearers and deaf, to carry out bilingual educational attendance support, similar to that of an university extension service. The program for capacitation was organized weekly considering the following steps: systematic observation and taking part in practices of the several sections of the extension service; theoretical studies in study groups and supervised implementation of the model in their schools. In order to help with the evaluation of that program, open question interviews were proposed with representative professionals of the partner institutions. The results showed that participation in attendance promoted: exchange among professionals and pondering on practice itself; improve teacher-deaf student communication; enhance the deaf student’s critical sense; widen the service in schools, mainly concerning the proposition and the development of the work with the families; improve educational support; update professionals on bilingualism. The representatives demonstrated the need to deepen their knowledge concerning both sign language structure and teaching methods for the deaf. Deaf professionals reported difficulties in understanding the texts and in keeping up theoretical classes. It could be inferred that the program met the objectives set and came to face a necessity of the present days, having even changed the teaching policy for the deaf in the area.
