Resumen

SAAD, Suad Nader. Preparing the inclusion way: dissolving myths and prejudices in relation to individuals with down syndrome. Rev. bras. educ. espec. [online]. 2003, vol.09, n.01, pp.57-78. ISSN 1413-6538.

This paper describes a qualitative research that investigated the educational and social background that allowed the cognitive potential development of ten young individuals with the Down syndrome. By analyzing both the prejudice that these individuals are exposed to and their cognitive behavior supported by the social-historic theory, it was possible to unveil the relevant performance of these individuals in several fields of knowledge. The information was gathered by means of direct observation, semi-structured interviews, written and artistic work produced by the individuals as well as their school records. The observation of the relevant performance and the literacy level of each one lead to the conclusion that the deficiency does not totally disable the individuals and that their families play an important role on their development. It also seems that the information allows a change on the way the society looks at them. However, it is not enough to eradicate the prejudice due to the cultural and people’s unconscious restrictions, not allowing the difference to be considered diversity as opposed to inequality, an important requirement for the constitution of the inclusive society.
