Abstract

WILLIAMS, Lúcia Cavalcanti de Albuquerque. About violence and disability: initial thoughts for a literature review. Rev. bras. educ. espec. [online]. 2003, vol.09, n.02, pp.141-154. ISSN 1413-6538.

The goal of this paper is to demonstrate the relationship between the topic of violence and disability. Case studies are presented to illustrate the point that the disability per se may be a direct result from acts of domestic violence. Three such examples are discussed: partner violence perpetrated to pregnant women may result in serious damage to the child (there are no studies about the prevalence of this serious problem in terms of  the Brazilian reality); b) child physical abuse and parental neglect are strongly associated with serious damage to children's development, and c) there is an ample body of literature showing the short and long term effects of child sexual abuse. The person with a disability (no matter which type) finds him or herself in a position of greater vulnerability, when compared to their counterparts, in terms of becoming a victim of violence. Unfortunately, in some cases, the handicapped person may also have an increased risk of being a perpetrator, such as in the case of larger risk of physical child abuse by developmentally delayed parents. Relevant research questions and some solutions are raised for the area of violence prevention and cessation.

Keywords : Domestic Violence; Child Physical Abuse; Child Sexual Abuse.
