AZEVEDO, Liana Fernandes de  and  MARQUES, Susi Lippi. Special needs and adoption: probability and prevention. Rev. bras. educ. espec. [online]. 2004, vol.10, n.01, pp.29-42. ISSN 1413-6538.

The risks of child development arisen from adoption institutions and the adoption processes justify studies aiming new alternatives in order to overcome some problems such as return of adopted children and inadequate childish development. In this context, the objective of this work was to investigate the process of the candidate selection for adoptive family in several aspects. Five psychologists and three social assistants from two cities of São Paulo state (Brazil) worked in this study. Herein, it was investigated: the stages of the selection process of candidates for adoptive family; the difficulties found in selection and selection criteria. The results showed: a) lack of information from the candidates for adoptive parents; b) the adoption group should be more integrated; c) the time to complete the process is very short; d) enormous demand of work; and e) the overall adoption process team should be more agile. Therefore, to achieve an efficient selection of candidates, the professionals involved in the adoption need specific training in order to provide a general view of the overall process and, consequently, more agility.
