Resumen

SCHMIDT, Carlo. Temple Grandin e o autismo: uma análise do filme. Rev. bras. educ. espec. [online]. 2012, vol.18, n.02, pp.179-194. ISSN 1413-6538.

This article presents an analysis of the film Temple Grandin which provides an overview of autism from the unique life experience of Temple Grandin. A brief synopsis is present describing the trajectory of a person with autism in coping with everyday obstacles at a time when this condition was still very little known. The analysis takes some scenes from the movie film to discuss aspects related to autism, based upon the literature. Specificities and future perspectives on categorical and dimensional diagnosis of autism are discussed, as well as confusion related to classification issues. The historical notion that people with autism are always highly intelligent is reviewed, proposing deconstruction of this stereotype by understanding the presence of special abilities within the scope of what cognitive theorists call different cognitive styles. Sensory disturbance in autism is also addressed, such as those that drive Temple to develop the hug machine to help other autistic people to deal with interpersonal difficulties, which were often mistaken for lack of affective expression. Finally, the correlations between quality of parenting and autism are discussed, based upon scenes in the film. The aim is not to exhaust the subject in a thorough and extensive analysis, but rather to provide theoretical understanding of the work.
