Disability Studies in Education emerged in the United States of America in the late 1990s, based on the search for a broader understanding of disability, which until that moment was limited to medical aspects. In this sense, this text features an interview with Professor Jan W. Valle, one of the representatives of the group that proposed this field of study. In the interview, she clarifies the relationship between Studies on Disability in Education and Special Education, in addition to discussing the role of the Individualized Educational Plan and the Universal Design for Learning in the inclusion of students in regular schools.
