Based on qualitative data, this article describes the development process of an augmentative communication system (AC), the Comunizika App, created collaboratively with six families of children with multiple disabilities resulting from Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS), who have complex communication needs and live in the Baixada Fluminense region of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The historical-cultural framework served as the foundation for the development of the activities integrated into the app. The findings highlight the importance of assistive technology (AT) resources and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) as tools that support and enhance children’s participation and communication processes; the value of collaboration with families in the development of the app; and the potential of AAC to expand communication, participation, and development of their children at home and, subsequently, in other contexts and with different interlocutors.
