The present paper focuses on the importance of institutional evaluation in the University environment. It occurs as consequence of demands about institutional efficiency and quality of learning and teaching processes. As mentioned by the authors, the basic focus of the institutional evaluations and its more ordinary methodological foundations are centered on the organizational aspects of the learning process or on quantitative and controlled aspects (government policy evaluation). In consequence, two different models of evaluation strategy may be used. The first modality (control) produces the creditation processes and the second deals with the institutional improvement and is formative in its essence. On an academic dimension, the revision of programs is in connection with this second modality and emphasizes processes as a strategy of persistent improvement. In addition, this paper also provides a bibliography review about different experiences on evaluation, mainly in Europe. Also, the Brazilian experience of PAIUB is included in this review.
