Abstract

The article analyses part of the recent documents of UNESCO about the function of Higher Education in society, emphasizing particularly the positions of the organization about university institutional evaluation. In doing so, it first considers the significance of quality in the university context. It also identifies, critically, some contradictions in the documents, as well as the relevant aspects for the development of institutional evaluation procedures that lead to the construction of a global quality, incorporating the several dimensions of the university performance, especially its pertinence.
