Abstract

This study examined the question of quantitative and qualitative approaches and its applications on educational research. In a historical perspective, analises how the question is being treated since four decades ago by the social sciences in Brazil and more recently by educational research. The paper points out that there is no opposition, superiority or dichotomy between qualitative and quantitative approaches. They are complementary approaches and the differences are more related to the nature and kinds of problems they deal with. In addition, the study emphasizes the importance of this debate that remains modem since the research results exceeds the limits of the university and penetrates inside the organizations and particularly in school settings, regarding the institutional evaluation.
