This text deals with the crisis of enlightenment presuppositions of the university and of the meaning of this crisis for evaluation. The university is the source of the modem principles of Reason and of the State wich inspired, respectively, the German and French models of the university. Reason and the State are two concepts that, in the context of globalizing tendencies of economy and the pos-modem reaction co modem rationalistic imperialism, are being seriously questioned. We intend to demonstrate that this destabilization affects the university in its foundations, implying the necessity for rethinking the institution from the point of view of its political-social function with and inside the State, as well as from the epistemic point of view of the production and teaching of knowledge. This rethinking radicalizes and amplifies the evaluation process that, along with the evaluation of the performance aspects of the university, must include in its agenda the evaluation of the institution as such, inquiring about its meaning and function in the next century, in the new scenario that is being announced.
