The main objective of this paper consists in discussing the theoretical and methodological assumptions underlying the sociological research for the determination of the socioeconomic status of a family or social group. This attribute, of difficult and complex measurement, has beeen submitted to a series of studies and analyses all over the world. We here present the arguments for the utilization of the so-called social indicators to determine this important population characteristic, stressing its advantages and drawbacks. The empirical data used for supporting this study consist of a research conducted in 1994 with the students enrolled at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.
