Since 1987 the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) has been selecting candidates through a process that gives priority to organized ideas, clarity of expression, establishing relationships of data and facts in interpretation and capacity for elaborating hypotheses. In synthesis, critical thinking. From 1987 co 1998, there were 402,362 candidates for the 43 courses offered by this University, considered as in vanguard of the country in terms of research and education. The present study is based on sociocultural data obtained from the population of candidates (369,035) in the period 1987-1997. It presents examples of tests given in the selection of candidates and the results obtained: a) a strong rise in percentage of candidates who read the newspapers and magazines instead of watching TV co get informed; b) changes in the teaching methodology of secondary schools, where teachers are now stimulating the attribution of meaning to the knowledge transmitted co students and developing a sense of criticism instead of mere memorization of material used in traditional entrance examinations of multiple choice questions; c) pressure for improving the level of teahing in the proper University, due to the changed profile of the entrants; d) innovations introduced in the selection process of many other institutions of higher learning with UNICAMP as model.
